Stow grew fast in the 80s and 90s, and the neighborhoods off Fishcreek and Graham Road show it: street after street of two-story colonials, most with a walk-out deck that was framed by the original homebuilder as quickly and cheaply as possible. Thirty years later, those decks are Stow's most common home-improvement project, and one of our steadiest streams of work. We tear off the old structure, pour proper footings, and put back a deck built to modern code with a 10-year workmanship warranty.
Stow's dominant house style, a two-story colonial with the kitchen a full story above the backyard, means walk-out decks 8 to 10 feet off grade. At that height, post sizing, bracing, and railing strength stop being details and start being safety issues. It's also where the original builder-grade construction cut the most corners. Our walk-out rebuilds use 6x6 posts on oversized footings, through-bolted rail posts, and stairs with proper stringer hangers: the structure your family leans against at a graduation party.
The City of Stow Building Department reviews deck permits with framing drawings, and inspectors here check footing depth before concrete. That's a good thing, and no problem when the holes are dug to 36 inches like ours are. We handle the drawings, the application, and every inspection date.
